Get to Know the Tarpons

Tarpons are the saltwater fish that does not have many commercial values like the other saltwater fish. This type of fish is not studied much, and even the habitat, migrations, and lifecycle of the fish is not known much. This type of fish is common in the inshore waters and, in fact, attractive fish is available from Florida to Texas. This fish is famous for its gill shaking jumps, blistering runs and fickle eating habits. Fishing this species is considered to be a challenge by many fishers.

Range Of Tarpons

When it comes to the Western Hemisphere, the fish will travel in the gulf streams. Caribbean and gulfs of Mexico will be having his type of fish. There are some evidence that state the particular species of fish is found in the western Central America’s waters, and this is because the fish swims through the Panama Canal. Indo-Pacific tarpons is said to be the cousins of this species and are common in the coastal waters of Southern Australia and Asia. When it comes to the Eastern side, this fish can be found in the coasts of Africa. In the year 2003, there is a record of catching tarpon with the following specifications 286 pounds and 9 ounces. This was caught in Guinea-Bissau. But it is not possible to make this place a fisher’s paradise due to the political unrest in the area.

Life History Of Tarpon

It is believed that a tarpon will live up to 55 years. It is said that a female tarpon has the ability to lay around 12 million eggs offshore. And the larva of the tarpon will be transparent ribbon-like creatures so it will not be very easy to identify it. In order to develop as juveniles, the fish will move towards the fresh waters or brackish waters.

In the first year, the fish will prefer to use the backwaters, and with age, the fish will be moving towards the wider habitats that will make the life easier. When the fish becomes an adult, it will be swimming in wider places and increasing its range. Some tarpon returns to the fresh waters in search of bait fish after a few years. Not necessarily all Tarpons will be doing so as some fishes love to live solo. The juveniles will have to depend on the surface in order to breathe without much trouble.

Discovery Of Tarpons

This particular variety of fish is said to be ancient as it is believed to survive from 125 million years back. But this fish was described in science only in the year 1847. Megalops is the Latin name of this fish which means large eye. Earlier, this tarpon was known to be available in 10 pounds or 20 pounds only but later in the early 1950’s Vic Dunaway caught a fish of 115 pounds. Later, this record was beaten by a fish of 202. The 5-pound fish was caught by James Holland in Florida. This particular variety of fish is said to be a catch and release type in most of the places. As you go back to your home ensure that the heaters are perfectly fine to have a complete relaxation after fishing. See here for more information!

Understanding the Smallmouth Bass

The smallmouth bass is a variety of fish that is also known by many other names like bronzeback, broewnbass and so on. This variety of fish is found commonly in the cold water streams that are also very clean. Usually, this type of fish will be feeding on crayfish, baitfish or insects. The traditional trout water is also encroached by this particular species. This happens due to the bucket activity, and it is also said to be a nuisance to some people who are living in the area.

Range Of Smallmouth Bass

This species of fish will be found in the St. Lawrance Seaway and the Great Lakes. This can also be identified on the banks of Mississippi river. Hudson Bay Basin also has the native species in this place. There are some similarities between the largemouth bass and the smallmouth bass. In fact, both the varieties have the ability to coexist. So the range of these two species will be nearly same. Still, the smallmouth bass will prefer to live in clearer and cooler water when compared to the other variety. Erie Canal construction in the year 1825 allowed the fish to spread all over Central New York. In fact, this particular smallmouth bass fish was stocked all over the area in the 19th century leading them to reach till California. Usually, the traditional trout and Salmon River dams will make the water warm. It is possible to find this smallmouth both in rivers and stagnant waters.

They require clear water as they are the visual predators. It will be better if the habitat will be having the sandy or rocky substrate. Normally, the smallmouth will be able to swim in the swift waters too, but the largemouth will not be comfortable here. But the fish will not be able to move swiftly in turbid waters due to the soft substrate. These species spawn in the spring. When the temperature of the water reaches 60 degrees, then it will be possible for the fish to reproduce. Normally, the nest will be built by the male near the current breaks or gravel near the shore. Even after the eggs are hatched, it will be guarded by the male fish. It is said that this species will attain maturity after 3 to 4 years. The lifetime of this smallmouth bass is 12 years.

Trouble For The Smallmouth

Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River is the place where this type of fish is found in large numbers for many years, in fact, this is said to be the Mecca of smallmouth fish. But in the past decade, a horrible thing happened here i.e. thousands of young smallmouth fishes died here due to the heat of late summer. In fact, the skin of these fish was damaged, and the population of the particular fish decreased rapidly due to the death of a large number of fishes in the area. In the adult fish, black splotches started to appear due to the same problem. An odd factor that surprised many people here is the testis of the male fish started to carry eggs that are supposed to be present in the female fish.

The reason for all these changes is the pollution. But it has not been proved only the pollution has caused this trouble. It is believed by researchers that it is due to the increase in water temperatures, mixing of wastes in the water and also the storm of chemicals. Now, the social activists are requesting the government to declare the river as impaired as this status will make the cleaning of the river a priority. The current record for this fish is 11 pound and 15 ounces in the year 1955 by David.
